Guy Teissier Wants Waving Foreign Flags in France to Become Illegal - French Government to Vote

In what is a surprising move to many, a new amendment to legislation has been proposed by French member of parliament, Guy Teissier. He is proposing to ""regulate the use of foreign flags in French public spaces by demanding prior permission".

Teissier has said, "A certain number of people, be they French, foreigners or not, during a diverse range of occasions – national holidays, protests – or in their daily lives, wave the flags of their country of origin."

The waving of foreign flags in France has become relatively commonplace, flags such as the Algerian Flag and Moroccan Flag in particular can be seen on a regular basis.

If the new amendment is passed the waving of a foreign flag without prior permission could be punishable with a fine of anything up to €1,500.

Kareem Fakhrawi Dies in Bahrain Police Custody - Flags Waved at Funeral

Amongst much civil unrest in Bahrain, news has emerged that opposition activist Kareem Fakhrwai has died whilst in police custody in a prison. Mattar Mattar, a member of Bahrain opposition group, Wefaq said "Either he was sick and didn't receive treatment or was tortured". Fakhrawi's death was the 4th similar death in Bahrain in recent days, the Bahrain government have promised to investigate.

The Bahraini Government has admitted to holding 453 detainees at the moment, to prevent civil unrest. Bahrain is currently under "martial law". Mattar has said "After these problems, many are afraid to contact us, I estimate the real number is not less than 600. That's one in every 1,000 Bahrainis," he said.

Funerals have surprisingly perhaps become a source of much anger amongst Shi'ites. The Bahrain government has banned all demonstrations, so protestors are waving foreign flags and symbols during funerals. Bahrain's Ministry of Interior warned against this action in a statement on Tuesday 12th April.

Flags being waved around the country at funerals include the Tunisian, Iranian and Iraqi Flags.

Turkish Elections Flag Costs - 36 Million Turkish Liras for 3 Main Political Parties

Turkey is readying itself for elections in June 2011. An amazing set of statistics have been revealed about the costs, the political parties are willing to pay for campaign flags. The three main parties are said to be spending the following:
* The AKP - Justice and Development Party (currently ruling party) - 15 Million Turkish Liras
* The CHP - Republican People’s Party - 12 Million Turkish Liras
* The MHP - Nationalist Movement Party - 9 Million Turkish Liras

Flag Salesman Nihat Bahçıvan says "Public areas are going to be festooned with campaign flags". Bahçıvan added that the AKP have purchased over 15,000 flags to date and that campaign flags account for the majority of a parties' campaign expenses.

Bahçıvan also talked about the heavy workloads the elections willingly brought on for his company - "Our factories work 18-hour days, including weekends. If parties return the eco-friendly flags used in the campaign, we pay back 25 percent of the cost to them".

The Turkish Elections promise to be interesting and once again flags will be at the centre of them.

Kingdom of Libya Flag - Will it return?

Amongst the recent tensions in Libya has emerged a flag related issue. Will the former Kingdom of Libya flag return.

The former flag of the Kingdom of Libya is shown below.

But the question is, will this replace the current Libyan flag? This is increasingly seen as a symbol of the Gadaffi regime:

The current flag of Libya as you can see is all green and was introduced by Gaddafi somewhat controversially on November 11, 1977. The flag is the only country flag of the world to have just one color. with no symbol to break the color up. The green reflects the countries love of Islam, for which green is the dominant color.

Various islamic states have major green emphasis in their flag design, these include (but are not limited to):
Algeria
Iran
Mauritania
Pakistan
Saudi Arabia
Turkmenistan
United Arab Emirates

In recent times, protestors around the world have been seen waving the former Kingdom of Libya flag. Recently in Times Square, New York, USA - 600 protestors were seen and some had the flag. Even within Libya itself the flag has been seen used as a weapon of protest, see this image below:

In the image below, a protester waves the Kingdom of Libya flag. This was during a protest against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, which was held in Benghazi, Libya on February 26, 2011.

In the image below, the Kingdom of Libya flag can be seen waving at the Libyan Embassy in the Hague, Netherlands. This has already replaced the traditional all green Libya flag:
